WHAT IS THIS MEDICATION FOR?

Cefadroxil 125mg (Generic) is broad-spectrum antibiotic, prescribed for certain types of bacterial infections such as urinary tract infection, skin and soft- tissue, pharynx (throat) and tonsils (tonsillitis). This medication fights against the bacteria present in the body.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Cefadroxil works to harm the bacteria and fight the infection.

HOW TO USE?

The recommended adult dose is 1 or 2 grams daily as a single dose or in two divided doses. The recommended dose for children is 30 mgkgday as a single dose or two divided doses. It comes as a tablet, capsule and liquid to take by mouth with food.

SIDE EFFECTS:

Upset stomach or throwing up. Diarrhea. For women, vaginal yeast infection. Report itching or discharge.

WHAT TO DO IF I MISS A DOSE?

Take a missed dose as soon as you think about it. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal time. Do not take 2 doses at the same time or extra doses. Do not change the dose or stop this drug.

PRECAUTIONS:

Alert your doctor if you have a history of allergic reactions (rash, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes) to similar antibiotics such as cefalexin, cefuroxime, cefixime, ceftibuten or any other cephalosporin antibiotics. Alert your doctor if you are allergic to penicillin antibiotics, for example, amoxicillin, ampicillin and cloxacillin. Penicillins are related to cephalosporins and if you are allergic to one, you may be allergic to the other too.

WHEN DO I NEED TO SEEK MEDICAL HELP?

If you think there was an overdose, call your local poison control center or ER right away. Signs of a very bad reaction to the drug include wheezing; chest tightness; fever; itching; bad cough; blue or gray skin color; seizures; or swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat. Very upset stomach or throwing up. Diarrhea, even after drug is stopped. Any bruising or bleeding. Any rash. Side effect or health problem is not better or you are feeling worse.

CAN I TAKE IT WITH OTHER MEDICINES?

Do not take Cefadroxil together with antacids because antacids could reduce the effectiveness of the antibiotic. Antacids are not likely to relieve the stomach discomfort that Cefadroxil may cause. If you must take antacids, take between meals at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after you have taken Cefadroxil. Alert your doctor if you are taking warfarin or probenecid.

FOOD RESTRICTIONS:

Avoid Alcohol.

HOW TO STORE:

Store it at room temperature.

PREGNANCY CATEGORY:

Category B: Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women OR Animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in any trimester.
